Who drinks more caffeine in your household?

When our son was brand-new, my husband and I agreed I would take the night shift because A) I did not have to work the next day, B) I’m a lighter sleeper and C) [most importantly] I can handle my caffeine. The poor guy (husband, not baby) can hardly function on lack of sleep but also runs around like a crazy person on acid when he has an amount of caffeine I’d consider “weak sauce”. Do not give this man a Red Bull – it’s only 80 mg caffeine (half the caffeine in a Grande PSL) but he will be as hyper as a puppy golden retriever.

A survey by Virginia Commonwealth University says more women drink caffeine than men. This is “any-source caffeine” meaning caffeine from coffee, tea, soda, energy drinks, and “other caffeinated beverages” like those “energy drinks in disguise” I’m always talking about.

More women than men consume caffeine on a regular basis. This survey found 85% of college women drink caffeine every week versus 71% of college men.

While this survey didn’t calculate the amount of caffeine consumed, research by the Department of Nutritional Sciences at Penn State did in their own survey. They concluded men consume more caffeine total, but adjusting for bodyweight shows women drink more caffeine per kilogram of bodyweight than men.

While more men than women reported drinking energy drinks, for both men and women, coffee is the #1 source of caffeine.

My husband and I may have very different caffeine sensitivities, and the reasons why women drink more caffeine than men (per bodyweight) requires a psychological and socioeconomic analysis beyond my capacity to provide.

But I believe Barista Life is right: Behind every successful woman is a substantial amount of coffee.
